CHETESHWAR PUJARA: MAKING A STRONG STATEMENT ABOUT COMING BACK INTO THE INDIAN TEAM

Cheteshwar Pujara has regained his form in England for Sussex in this year’s County Championship. Till now, Pujara has managed to score 531 runs in just 5 innings which includes two double centuries along with a ton. The 34-year old veteran was axed earlier from the Indian team during the home series against Sri Lanka and that has provided him with the opportunity to make a debut in the County Championship.

Pujara has scored two unbeaten double centuries (201* against Derbyshire and 203* against Durham) and a gritty knock of 109 runs against Worcestershire till now. He has now scored the most number of first-class double hundreds (15*, the previous record was 13 by Kumar Sangakkara) by an Asian cricketer. He has also equalled the most number of double hundreds in the County Championship by an Indian (Mohammad Azharuddin also scored two double centuries for Derbyshire). Pujara’s father cum coach has stated that the lack of game time was the main reason behind Pujara’s run drought over the last few seasons, According to him, during the covid-19 outbreak, Pujara could not manage so much game time to get prepared properly for teams like Australia, England. Now, this Sussex stint is providing him game time and he is getting back to his consistency.

Team India is due to play a test match against England in the coming July and hence, this form of Pujara will be a blessing in disguise. Team India selectors will find it tough to avoid these runs in the English condition. Team India Skipper Rohit Sharma must be relieved also by seeing Pujara in such a form.
